Small Business Web Design Case Study - Custom Build in 2 Weeks
A full custom website build for a residential cleaning business with a distinctive gnome-inspired brand identity. Every page designed and built from the ground up, no templates, no compromises.
Overview
A cleaning services business approached us with a clear brief, and a clear personality. This website design case study for a small business started with a gnome-themed brand concept the owner wanted to bring to life online: something warm, distinctive, and memorable in a market full of identical-looking competitors. We built the entire website from a blank canvas: structure, visual design, content hierarchy, and a fully responsive build delivered in four weeks.
There was no existing site to work from. We started with strategy and ended with a finished product, a custom web presence that reflects who the business actually is, not what a stock template assumes a cleaning company should look like.
The Challenge
Cleaning services is one of the most commoditised categories online. Most competitors run near-identical websites: stock photos of mops, a phone number, a short list of services, and a contact form. Virtually none of them communicate any sense of personality or brand, which means customers make decisions almost entirely on price and proximity.
The challenge was to build something that felt genuinely different, while still projecting the professionalism and trustworthiness customers expect when inviting someone into their home. The brief needed a strong answer to two questions at once: how do we stand out, and how do we still convert?
Our Approach
We treated the client's gnome-inspired concept not as a novelty, but as a legitimate brand direction. The aesthetic became a design language, expressed through color, iconography, and copy tone, woven into a custom website built from scratch that is, at its core, designed to convert service inquiries.
- Brand direction translated into a consistent visual system: deep forest greens, warm earthy tones, clean typography
- Site architecture mapped around how customers actually choose a cleaning service: trust, convenience, price, and availability
- Personality and professionalism balanced: the gnome theme adds character without undermining credibility
- Mobile-first from day one, cleaning services inquiries are predominantly made on mobile
- Clear conversion flow: from landing to inquiry with minimal friction at every step
Execution
The build kicked off with a strategy session to map the site architecture and define the conversion goals. From there, we moved through design to development in a single continuous phase, no handoffs, no delays.
- Custom homepage built from scratch, hero, service overview, trust signals, and CTA all above or near the fold
- Service pages structured around what customers want to know before booking: scope, process, price clarity, and what to expect
- Booking and contact flow simplified to reduce drop-off, minimal fields, clear next steps
- Trust elements integrated throughout: review placement, local presence indicators, and a transparent approach to pricing
- Gnome-inspired design details woven in tastefully, brand personality visible without being distracting or cartoonish
- Fully responsive across all screen sizes, tested on mobile, tablet, and desktop
- Clean, fast build with no unnecessary bloat, optimized for performance from the start
The Result
The site launched on schedule, four weeks from the initial brief. The client received a complete, custom-built web presence that stands out from every local competitor, not through gimmicks, but through genuine brand clarity and considered design.
The owner's response at handover: "It's exactly what I had in my head, but better put together than I could have imagined." The business now has a website that reflects who they are, positions them as the memorable choice in their market, and is structured to grow with them as the business scales.
